CAMP is quickly approaching, and as it does, I reflect on my previous years attending this conference. At my first CAMP, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Throughout the week, I came to realize that it was an incredible opportunity to share a space with people who had the same goal I did: aquatic safety for every aquatic venue.
Each year, CAMP leaves me with a new takeaway. Sometimes it’s recognizing that I never fully processed the mental health impacts of responding to a major emergency; other times it’s learning something as unexpected as what the inside of an expired AED pad looks like or being introduced to cutting-edge technology in our field. But what truly makes CAMP special is the camaraderie. After attending other conferences, I’ve come to appreciate that CAMP stands apart because of the sense of togetherness it creates. There’s something unique about traveling to new places as a group or spotting other attendees as you walk around the ship. I’ve had the privilege of being part of moments where people experience the clear blue waters of the Bahamas for the first time, moments that feel genuinely special.

Beyond that, I’ve watched younger aquatic professionals, me included, absorb the knowledge they need to continue pushing themselves and their facilities in a positive direction. Whether it’s learning what’s coming down the pipeline in the aquatic space or recognizing areas where they can improve now, they leave the ship with a mission. While stepping into a space with over a hundred unfamiliar faces can feel overwhelming, choosing to step outside that comfort zone has lasting benefits. The confidence they gain and the impact on their careers make the experience truly transformative.

All in all, attending CAMP over the years has been an experience with long-lasting impact. I’ve had the opportunity to network with individuals who have vast experience in our field. Even more importantly, each year I learn a wide range of information that is beneficial not only to me, but also to my clients. Hearing our Medical Directors speak each year is a personal favorite part of CAMP. I truly believe CAMP is an event not to be missed. Learning firsthand from professionals across different fields, connecting with others who share a like-minded attitude, and pushing myself out of my comfort zone has made each year a truly unique experience.
